My radio turns off every time I transmit on high power.

First have the antenna tested for a high SWR, or temporarily connect the radio to another VHF antenna that is working properly to verify the problem. If the antenna is working properly make sure the unit is connected directly to a solid 12V source, or connect directly to the ships 12V battery.

How do I check to make sure my MMSI has been entered correctly?

It is possible to view your MMSI number to make sure it is programmed correctly. Press and hold the CALL SET key to activate the setup menu. Scroll down and select USER MMSI by pressing the CALL SET key. At this point do not attempt to change the numbers unless they are not correct, doing so will count as a second attempt at user MMSI input. To exit, press the 16/9 key.

What should I do if I get the message "error too many entries press the CALL/SET key"?

If you attempt to enter the MMSI more than 2 times the unit will not allow you to enter your MMSI number. This is a factory setting to prevent misuse of unauthorized MMSI numbers. To reset the unit you must send it in to the factory service center:

The party that I am transmitting to advises that my voice is weak.

The INTREPID+ speaker microphone has Noise Canceling trade name (clear Voice). This mic works by canceling the noise so it is very important the when using the mic to speak directly into the mic hole with your mouth about 1 inch away.

How far can I extend the CMP23 RAM MIC?

The RAM comes with 23' of cable. Standard Horizon offers 10' of extension cable called CAW23. Two CAW23 can be added to the Ram cable for a total length of 43'.

What is DSC all about?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

DSC is a semi-automated method of establishing a radio call, it has been designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an international standard for establishing VHF, MF and HF radio calls. It had also been designated as part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). It is planned that DSC will eventually replace aural watches on distress frequencies and will be used to announce routine and urgent maritime safety information broadcasts.

This new system will allow mariners to instantly send a distress call with GPS position (when connected to the transceiver) to the US Coast Guard and other vessels within range of the transmission. DSC will also allow mariners to initiate or receive distress, Urgency, Safety routine, POS Request, POS Send and Group calls to or from another vessel equipped with a DSC transceiver.

USCG DSC Watch

The USCG has plans to upgrade its VHF National Distress System (expected by 2005), so at the time of printing only larger vessels that are required to carry VHF DSC radios, other boater with VHF DSC radios and most towing companies will be able to hear your distress transmission

Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI)

What is an MMSI?

An MMSI is a nine digit number used on Marine Transceiver capable of using Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This number is used like a telephone number to selectively call other vessels.

How can I obtain an MMSI assignment?

style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Boat US is offering MMSI free MMSI numbers. Visit the following to register: http://www.boatus.com/mmsi/.

style="mso-spacerun: yes">

style="mso-spacerun: yes">Distress Call

Transmits a DSC Distress message to all radios equipped to receive a DSC Distress call. Some Standard Horizon radios may be connected to a GPS to also transmit the Latitude, Longitude of the vessel.

Individual Call

This feature allows the user to contact another vessel capable of using DSC and automatically switch the radio to a desired working channel. This feature is similar to calling a desired vessel on CH16 and requesting them to go to another channel.

Urgency Call

This call should be used when a vessel may not be truly in distress, but have a potential problem that might lead to a distress situation.

Safety Call

Used to transmit boating safety information to other vessels. This message usually contains information about an overdue boat, a derelict afloat, loss of a navigation aid or an important meteorological message.

POSITION REQUEST

Advancements in DSC have made it possible to poll the location of another vessel and show the position of that vessel on the display some Standard Horizon VHF's. Standard Horizon has taken this feature one step further, if any Standard Horizon GPS is connected a Standard Horizon VHF with this function the polled position of the vessel is shown on the display of the GPS chart plotter making it easy to navigate to the location of the polled vessel. This is a great feature for anyone wanting to know the position of anther vessel for example you buddy that is catching fish, or finding the location of a person you are cruising with.

POSITION SEND

The feature is similar to Position Request, however instead of requesting a position of another vessel this function allows you to send you position to another vessel. Your vessel must have an operating GPS receiver connected style="mso-spacerun: yes"> the a Compatible Standard Horizon VHF to send the position

When other vessel receives your position, the transceiver outputs the position to aany Standard Horizon GPS chart plotter to show your position on the receiving transceiver.

CALL WAITING DIRECTORY

The DSC Call Waiting directory logs received distress individual calls that are received and not answered within 5 minutes or while the radio is set on the DSC Standby function. Calls will be logged while busy with other communications as long as the transmitter is not keyed at the time of the call. If the call is answered within 5 minutes the call will not be logged. When a call is logged, a message will appear on the LCD.

ADDITIONAL DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING INFORMATION

For additional information the USCG has an excellent site that should be visited at www.navcen.uscg.mil/marcoms/gmdss/dsc.html.

What IS JIS7 submersible rating mean?

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards. Level 7 is a submersible rating. The INTREPID+ can withstand being submersed for 30 minutes. We all know that if this actually happens, you have bigger problems than your VHF, but the main jest of this test is to make sure the radio can withstand being mounted on a VERY wet boat.

I push the "SCAN" key and the channels do not change like other radios that I have had previously.

The scanning mode on the INTREPID+ is a little different from previous VHF models. After you have finished programming in all the channels you would like to scan, and you press the scan button you will see "MEMSCAN" indication on the LCD of the radio. "MEMSCAN" indicates the radio is scanning the programmed channels; the channel number on the LCD indicates last channel that the radio received a transmission on. The reason for this change is to quickly see the last channel a transmission was made on. You can verify that the channels are programmed in to the scan memory by pressing the MEM button then immediately scroll through the channels using the channel selector knob to scroll through the programmed channels

I cannot control the volume of the external audio speaker when the RAM mic is plugged in.

When an external audio speaker is connected and the RAM mic is plugged in the audio control of the external speaker is controlled by the RAM mic. If the RAM mic is unplugged the audio of the external speaker is controlled by the main radio.

Is there a flush mount kit available for this radio?

This radio can be flush mounted using the optional CMB16 flush mount kit available through our parts department at  (714) 827-7600 x6800.

DSC (DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING) CAPABILITIES

The most important reason to have a VHF radio on board you vessel is safety. The U.S. Coast Guard will soon have national coverage for DSC reception. The INTREPID+ features the official U.S. Coast Guard recognized version of this technology.
In an emergency the INTREPID+ is capable of sending an automated, unattended, continuous, digital MAYDAY message that includes current vessel position time/day and a FCC assigend vessel identification. By design, the DSC MAYDAY will be digitally received by the Coast Guard, all commercial vessels and any other vessel equipped with a DSC radio. This digital safety feature insures prompt assistance, eliminating critical mistakes in MAYDAY transmissions that occur when operators are under stress.
To increase your sense of security the INTREPID+ also receives digital acknowlegements alerting the radio operator that the vessels distress call has been received. Of course the DISTRESS Key is properly protected with a cover to reduce the possibility of an unintentional activation.
In addition to transmitting a DSC Distress call the INTREPID+ can show a vessel in distress when a DSC distress is receieved simply by connecting any STANDARD HORIZON GPS Chart plotter to the INTREPID+. This allows you to exactly see and navigate to the vessel in distress.
Also, INTREPID+ allows the user to exchange position data with a fellow cruiser or fisherman with its POSITION REQUEST or POSITION SEND functions. When connected to a STANDARD HORIZON GPS Chart Plotter, these positions are actually shown on the display. Should it become necessary to notify all of the vessels of a commercial fleet or towing service, the GROUP CALL feature makes it simple.

DSC Position Polling

Advancements in DSC have made it possible to poll the location of another vessel and show the position of that vessel on the display of the INTREPID+. Standard Horizon has taken this feature one step further, if any Standard Horizon GPS is connected to the INTREPID+ the polled position of the vessel is shown on the display of the GPS chart plotter making it easy to navigate to the location of the polled vessel. This is a great feature for anyone wanting to know the position of anther vessel for example you buddy that is catching fish, or finding the location of a person you are cruising with.
DSC Position Send The feature is similar to Position Request, however instead of requesting a position of another vessel this function allows you to send you position to another vessel. Your vessel must have an operating GPS receiver connected to send the position. When another INTREPID+ or SPECTRUM+ equiped vessel receives your position, the transceiver outputs a the position to NMEA DSC sentence which may be used byany a Standard Horizon GPS chart plotter to show your position on the receiving transceiver.

DUAL STATION CAPABILITY WITH OPTIONAL RAM MIC

The INTREPID+ is capable of using the RAM (Remote Access Mic) for second station operation. The RAM comes with 23' of installation cable, quick disconnects and features duplicate most controls on theradio and and has an impressive LCD. Two additional 10' extensions can be added (CAW23).

GPS REPEATABILITY

When connected to your GPS position receiver the INTREPID+ will display time, date, Latitude/Longitude, Speed Over Ground (SOG), and Course Over Ground (COG). GPS repeatablility insures the accurate and safe transmission of your location in an emergency or when you are attempting to meet a fellow cruiser.

NOICE CANCELLING SPEAKER MIC

The HORIZON INTREPID+ utilizes an exceptional microphone meeting the same strict standards for waterproofness as the radio. INTREPID+ features Clear Voice Noise Reduction Technology eliminating unwanted background noises like engines and wind during transmission. This assures transmissions are crystal clear.

Handy buttons on the rubber-armored microphone provide convenient access to channels 16 and 9 plus up/down channel selection.

PROGRAMMABLE SCANNING AND PRIORITY SCAN, NOAA WEATHER ALERT

INTREPID+ highlights scanning of user selected channels or priority scanning of Channel 16. Additionally, INTREPID+ features 10 NOAA weather channels including weather alert allowing INTREPID+ to intercept frequency encoded regional Emergency Weather alerts. The LCD display provides visual indications for all scanning functions in a bold easy to understand flags.

HUGE LCD

Visibility is enhanced with an enormous LCD with tall, wide digits and obvious information flags that are easy to identify. The LCD and keypad feature 3-step backlighting and 7 steps of LCD contrast adjustment.

BUILT BETTER, SO, IT IS BACKED BETTER

The INTREPID+ is covered by STANDARD HORIZON's exclusive 3-year Waterproof Warranty.
